Description

Vintage 1960s Set Of 2 Ornate Gold Embossed Charger Plates Baroque Style, 13” Two ornate charger plates with raised Baroque scrollwork and rich gold finish. Great vintage shape overall — fronts are bright and intact Defects & imperfections - please check pictures made under the bright light & magnification: - small paint loss along the rims - paint loss (gesso is seen) on the backs from age and use. Pictures are part of the description, please check them & let me know if you require additional ones. Fascinating Fun Facts: • Charger plates began in 16th-century Europe as underplates to protect tablecloths and keep food warm; diners never ate directly off them. • By the 20th century, ornate versions like these were made almost entirely for decorative use — as wall art, mantel displays, or centerpieces rather than dining service. • Gesso (the Italian word for gypsum) has been used since Renaissance times to create raised designs before gilding or painting. • Mid-century artisans often used composite bases topped with gesso to mass-produce ornate Baroque-style décor quickly and affordably. • The Baroque Revival and Hollywood Regency styles were especially popular in the 1950s–1970s, bringing lavish gold tones and dramatic curves into modern interiors.
