Marks on the hardware says " pat d mar 1680" which means it was patented march 16, 1880. These once popular trunks were used on long trans- Atlantic trips from the UK to the USA. The dome top trunks were shapped like this so they went on top of a stack of them so nothing was stacked on them.These dome top trunks Only the wealthy could afford their ornate designs. The inside of the trunk is lined with wall paper and is accented with chromolithograph prints of Victorian scenes. the prints offer some possible clues towards the intended user. Often a man's trunk will have images of men and a woman's case images of women. These are valued at the low low low end of $300-400 dollars and thats in horrible shape I need sold asap.
