A history of this type of pottery follows:Ameytalepec PotteryPainted clay, barro pintado, is made by Nahua painters from La Mezcala, a region on the Balsas River basin the state of Guerrero, Mexico. They paint beautiful colonial scenes depicting their way of life. Pottery production in Oapan and Ameyaltepec dates from pre-Hispanic times. Women made pottery& plates, ceremonial pieces, human& animal figures. In the 1950's when foreign tourists starting coming to Mexico those areas became outlets for the Balsas crafters. There are several villages in the La Mezcala region that paint on clay, but three villages are very significant for their geographic locatio& historical background: Oapan - has a pre-Hispanic pottery tradition& was the first place where painted clay was made.Ameyaltepec – is the hometown of Pedro de Jesus& Critino Flores Medina, pioneers in the amate paintings. The biggest evolution in the painting style was accomplished here. Also home to the distinctive red/tan pottery.Xalitla – a small village located next to the Federal hwy from Mexico City to Acapulco, becoming a producing& selling center for many Guerrero folk art styles.  This gorgeous piece has sat in my display hutch for 30 years!
