Description
A magnificent vintage Castro Convertibles Chesterfield sofa, upholstered in richly aged oxblood/burgundy leather and carrying its original Castro Convertible Corp. manufacturing labels. ( Have more photos to share if interested. Just ask. ) . Stated by the original family to date to the early 1980s, this is an exceptionally substantial piece with classic Chesterfield proportions: deeply button-tufted back, arms and seat, generous rolled arms, brass-tone nailhead trim and a wonderfully low, broad silhouette. The leather is really what makes this sofa. Decades of use have produced beautiful tonal variation—from deep burgundy and wine to brighter oxblood highlights—with natural creasing, crazing, rubbing, scratches and areas of liggt surface wear throughout that is truly stunning. This is genuine vintage patina, not a uniformly refinished leather surface, and it gives the piece tremendous depth and character. Originally manufactured as a Castro convertible/sleeper sofa, the original mattress was removed by the owners; the substantial internal steel convertible mechanism remains. The sofa is extremely heavy, solid and well constructed. Original Castro labels remain attached, including the Castro Convertible Corp. manufacturing/law tag identifying the company’s Ocala, Florida facility. A bit of background history.... Castro Convertible Corp was a pioneering American furniture company best known for popularizing the modern sleeper sofa.Founded in 1931 by Sicilian immigrant Bernard Castro, the company achieved massive success during the post-World War II era. As families moved into smaller urban apartments, Castro recognized the need for spacesaving furniture. The brand famously marketed its products with the iconic television slogan: "So easy to open, even a child can do it!"—featuring the founder's young daughter, Bernadette. Many mid-century vintage versions of these original sleeper mechanisms are highly sought after by collectors It has been carefully cleaned and conditioned and given minor touch-ups while intentionally preserving the character of the aged leather. Please review photographs closely for condition and patina. *** Happy to share more photos.
