Description

Cuyamel Fruit company Steamhip SeCuyamel Fruit company Steamhip Servicervice Interesting letter on a pitch for a fruit/steam ship company trying a new private yacht cruise service. I think they are a subsidiary or Broker of Cuyamel Fruit Company and this letter was literally written 2 weeks exactly before Black Thursday on Oct 24th, 1929 which was prior to Black Tuesday on the 29th of October. In 1929, after the October crash of international financial markets, Zemurray sold Cuyamel to United Fruit in exchange for stock and retired.  Black Tuesday sent Cuyamel shares into a tailspin, forcing the combination of the two companies (Vaccaro, known by 1929 as the Standard Fruit Company, remained independent). For his sale of the Cuyamel Fruit Company, Zemurray received 300,000 shares of United Fruit, with a market valuation of $31 million, which would be about $420 million today. With the sale, United Fruit secured its domination of the United States banana market for the better part of the 20th century. Masonic Temple New Orleans  October 10th, 1929 Mr. Henry P. Ramsdell, Newburgh, N.Y.  Dear Sir, May we call your attention to a very unusual private yachting service which we are inaugurating from New York to the tropics.  Enclosed id a little folder that explains these twelve day cruises that we are sure will appeal to those who prefer a sea voyage,  with privacy of a personal yacht and all the advantages and services that will please the most fastidious. The rate for chaterting the entire passaneger accommodations of any of one of our three new steamers for twelve days is $3600.  Twelve congenial friends may arrange to share this expense, which would make the cost $25.00 per day per person. This includes everything. side trips, fishing trips, meals on Board, everything except liquid refreshments (the ship flys the Honduran Flag.) We would be pleased to personally explain these cruises to you and will gladly send a representative to meet you and conduct you to Pier #27, Easdt River, New York City for an inspection trip over either the S.S. Maya, S.S. Toltec, or S.S. Aztec.  Yours truly, J.J. Kelleher, Traffic Manager for Atlantic Navigation Corp, Agents 17 Battery Place,  New York, New York Pick up in James Island near folly beach.
