It is native to forests from 0 to 2,200 m above sea level. It is also known as Tabernaemontana horstii (formerly known as Tabernaemontana horstii) or, due to its short stature, dwarf cinnamon or Dwarf cinnamon. It produces large, white to cream-coloured, windmill-shaped flowers up to 10 cm at the end of the flowering stalk. The flowers have a gardenia-like fragrance. It is used as a hemostatic agent and other folk medicine in its home country.
