Description

Authentic Liberty Ship Hatch Cover – Original WWII Maritime Salvage This authentic Liberty Ship Hatch Cover is a genuine piece of maritime history, presented in the exact condition shown in the photos. Its weathered wooden surface features steel bands that secure both ends, while two circular cutouts reinforced with steel bars serve as sturdye handles. Left in its original, unfinished state, this hatch cover offers a perfect opportunity for restoration or custom projects. For additional inspiration, check out our collection of nautical furniture and decor. Features: Material: Weathered wood with steel band reinforcements on each end. Unique Design: Two steel-bar-reinforced circular cutouts function as handles. Unfinished Condition: Ideal for creating custom furniture or other innovative projects. Historical Significance: The Liberty hatch cover was a crucial component of World War II Liberty ships. It was engineered to protect cargo during transport. Designers prioritized durability and efficiency, using steel or wood with tarpaulin seals for a watertight and lightweight solution. This simple yet effective design aligned with wartime mass-production needs. Liberty hatch covers played a vital role in safeguarding supplies during dangerous missions, symbolizing wartime innovation. After the war, many covers found new life in civilian applications, preserving their historical value. Patent markings are hard to read but located on metal bands. MEASUREMENTS: 59" Long x 28" Wide x 16" Height ( x 2.75” Thickness). PLEASE OBSERVE THE VERY LAST 4 PHOTOS IN THE GALLERY. The 9th , 10th, 11th and 12th photos will show you the measurements with a tape measure being present in each picture. WEIGHT: This table weighs in at 80-1/2 lbs With the legs attached the whole thing weighs 97 lbs & 12 oz. This unique coffee table is a piece of history, made from a World War II Liberty Ship Cargo Hatch Board Cover/Door. The reverse side still has original OCEAN GRAY Paint from the Liberty Class Ship that this Cargo Hatch Door came off of. Liberty ships were also known as cargo ships and eventually modified into troop transports by the end of the war. The remaining ships that survived the war were decommissioned then finally sent to ship yards to be scrapped and picked apart. There are only 2 Liberty class ships known today that are fully operational and serve as floating museums. The USS Jeremiah O’Brien docked at the port of San Francisco, California, is a famous Liberty Ship that actually participated in the invasion of Normandy (D-Day June 6th, 1944). The solid wood tabletop once actually sailed the Atlantic and/or Pacific during WW2 which eventually was decommissioned and sent to be scrapped. Measurements: It measures 59 inches in length, and 28 wide and 16 inches in height. Perfect for any indoor or outdoor space. The table's nautical style is perfect for a room with a coastal theme. The antique rectangular table weighs about 100 pounds and has a thickness of about 2.5 inches. It was manufactured in the United States between 1935 and 1944. The table is perfect for any room and can be used as a functional table or as a decorative piece. Whether restored or remaining in original condition these tables go for thousands of dollars for their rugged design and historical significance. The photographs included in this listing are a visual part of this description as well as the condition of the table. Please observe them, look at them carefully and ask questions if you feel you are not seeing what you need to see.
