Description
Pate sur pate is defined (wikipedia) as a French term meaning paste on paste. It is a method of porcelain decoration in which a relief design is created on an unfired unglazed body by applying successive layers of porcelain slip with a brush. Once the main shape is built up, it is carved away to give fine detail before the piece is fired. The has been used in France in 1850. This plate shows a seated woman at a vanity with an attending cupid. The raised decoration is on a blue background with gold border design. It measures 8 3/4 " in diameter. The lip on the back of the plate has been drilled for hanging. The plate is hallmarked, and in fine condition.
