Description

Authentic Pre-Columbian Tiwanaku Carved Llama Bone Pendant / Stele Deeply incised bone artifact from the ancient Tiwanaku (Tiahuanaco) culture, which flourished in the southern Andean Altiplano region around Lake Titicaca (modern-day Bolivia and Peru) between 600 and 1200 CE Physical Attributes & Condition: • Dimensions: Approximately 2.5 inches long. • Material: Carved from natural camelid bone (typically llama or alpaca). The center shaft is highly polished from historical handling, while the joint ends beautifully exhibit the authentic, porous trabecular (spongy) bone texture • Features: Includes a clean, anciently drilled perforation at one end, indicating it was intended to be suspended and worn as a pectoral amulet, high-status pendant, or ceremonial tool finial. The reverse side remains uncarved and smooth, meant to sit flat against the body or a mounting surface • Condition: Excellent ancient condition with a warm, aged honey-brown patina. The incised details remain sharp and highly legible. There are no modern alterations or repairs. Please review the photos to evaluate the fine details Iconography & Design: The face of the bone is intricately engraved in classic Tiwanaku style, featuring: • A border zone of interlocking geometric diamonds and steps • A central register depicting stylized, blocky profile figures in low relief • Right-angled step-fret (meander) motifs reminiscent of the monumental stone relief architecture found at the Kalasasaya temple complex Provenance: Acquired years ago at a US estate sale approximately 20 years ago It is being offered without formal archaeological paperwork, as is typical for items sourced from older American estates.
