Description
- Provenance: original artwork signed “Roybrt.” c. 1880 - Media: oil on canvas - Artwork Dimensions: 9”h x 12”v - Frame Dimensions: 14 1/2”h x 17 1/2”v - Condition: good, needs thorough cleaning and re-stretching… This work of late Romanticism depicts an old Scottish Highlander lighting his pipe, dressed in traditional clothing that would have been long out of date at the time this work was executed. The wrinkles on his face and hands portray the rough life of a sheep or cattle-herdsman, and his long hours in the rain and sun, catching a few winks of sleep in the heather with little more than the tartan tunic slung over his shoulder. His beard is white and scruffy, and his skin like leather; yet his eyes are softly closed, and his fingertips gentle and kind. The respite, as he stops to light his pipe, is suggestive of the simple pleasures that comfort him as he survives, taking life day-by-day.
