Description
Daum Pate De Verre Frog Clock This is Daum's Pate de Verre Frogs Clock (Pendule La Grenouile in French). It is Daum's product #44763. This clock was very expensive when originally sold. It is a great collectors item. The design includes two frogs sitting on lily pads and holding up a clear crystal ball with another frog on top. These three frogs have small golden metal spheres for eyes. There is also a baby frog on the back side. The clock sits in a cutout on the crystal ball. The clock's face carries the Daum label. It contains a quartz battery operated movement that is in good working order and keeps perfect time. The base is a separate piece that acts as a cradle for the crystal ball. The top frog is attached to the crystal ball. This clock is a great example of Daum's Pate de Verre art glass. The colors are so beautiful. There are bright vibrant shades of green, purple, and brown in the Pate de Verre pieces. Condition is excellent. Has a few very small scratches but no chips or other issues. Has literally sat on a shelf since we got it. Have seen selling for up to $2000 The base measures about 5 inches tall by 7 inches wide and 5 inches deep; The crystal ball has an egg shape measuring about 7.5 tall and 5 inches wide; When assembled together the overall height is about 10 inches. The colored crystal was made using the pate-de-verre process, an ancient technique in which glass is made by blending and refining crushed glass of different colors into a paste that is poured into molds. It was first used by Egyptians about 3,600 years ago. The process was revived by French glassmakers, especially Daum and Galle, around the end of the nineteenth century. Currently Daum is the only commercial crystal manufacturer employing the pate-de-verre process. Daum Cristallerie, based in Nancy, France, was founded in 1878 by Jean Daum (1825–1885). His sons, Auguste Daum (1853–1909) and Antonin Daum (1864–1931), oversaw its growth during the burgeoning Art Nouveau period. Daum has earned a reputation of excellence throughout the world thanks to the company’s mastery of working with pâte de Verre cristal. Each Daum creation is a unique work of art, recognized for its purity, the very special manner in which it catches the most minute variations of light, the intensity of the flamboyant colors and its harmonious lines. The Daum studio remains operational and their timeless crystal sculptures continue to be coveted by today’s collectors. We do not have the original Daum box but will pack carefully. Shipping charges do include insurance for the full value.
