The Constitution: By an act of Congress, the United States Navy was founded with the building of 6 frigates. One of the frigates was the USS Constitution, a 44-gun frigate built in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1797. The Constitution is most famous for her role in the War of 1812 with Great Britain. The first duel between the British and American navies took place on August 19, 1812. The Constitution fought and won a notable action against the British 38-gun frigate Guerriere - an achievement which earned her the nickname 'Old Ironsides' - in which she received little damage. The sailors called her Old Ironsides because so many British cannon balls bounced harmlessly off her thick sides. She captured the British Java later that year, and followed these victories with another in 1815, against the Cyane and Levant. The Constitution continued under Navy commission and active duty until 1851. At that time, she was refitted as a school ship. She was used at Annapolis, Maryland during the civil war as a school ship for midshipmen. In 1878 she took her last cruise into foreign waters, carrying US exhibits to Havre France for the Paris Exposition. She ran around at Swanage Point, England, and was salvaged with the aid of the English Navy. She was brought back to Boston harbor for repairs and used again as a training ship until 1900. At that time she was placed on permanent exhibition at the U.S. Navy Yard, Boston. She has undergone repairs through the years, and is currently serving as a ship museum. She carries the honor of being the oldest commissioned vessel in the U.S. Navy.
