Description

These are Canadian two-dollar bills from the 1954 series, issued by the Bank of Canada. The 1954 series is notable for featuring a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II designed by portrait photographer Yousuf Karsh. This design, however, led to some controversy due to a perceived resemblance of the Queen's hair to the devil, resulting in the series being nicknamed the "Devil's Head" series. This led to a redesign in 1956 to remove the perceived devilish imagery. The bills feature bilingual text in English and French, reflecting Canada's official languages. The signatures on the bills varied depending on the Governor and Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada at the time of issue. These bills are no longer in circulation, having been replaced by the two-dollar coin (the 'Toonie') in 1996, making them a collectible item for numismatists.
