Description

Unfortunately, I am selling my project: a 36’ school bus turned (almost) skoolie with 209k miles and a professionally-welded 16” roof raise. In addition to selling the bus itself, I am also selling roughly $14,000 worth of additional items at a 10% discount (all of which are ultimately necessary to completing the build). All additional items are BRAND NEW AND NEVER INSTALLED.. more on that later. First, about the bus: it’s a 1996 Navistar International Series 3000 Genesis (VIN: 1HVBGAAN7TA075274). It has an AmTran body, International chassis, and an Allison transmission. The engine is an International DT-466 L6, 7.6L diesel engine with 209k miles, meaning it has a TON of life left. In addition to the standard brakes, it has a KLAM Electromagnetic Retarder system that is, simply put, an additional braking system that uses magnets to slow down the bus without friction or wear, eliminating the need to worry about overheating the brakes on steep grades; this system costs several thousands of dollars and is worth every penny. The bus has a clean title, no accidents, and has had only 2 owners. Located in Durango, CO until 2022 and Denver, CO onwards means no/minimal rust! It’s a full length, 72-passenger bus (about 36’ long) and has been completely demo’d, has a full tank of diesel (100 gallons), and the tires are in great condition. All work thus far has been done to a professional standard including the 16” roof raise. The roof was raised and secured using hat channel extensions from https://offerup.com/redirect/?o=c2tvb2xpZS5jb20= and reinforced with steel c-channel, both of which were professionally welded by Good Karma Fabrication LLC in Commerce City, CO. The sheet metal enclosing the bus is 18 gauge galvannealed sheet metal which has been installed with the correct overlapping to eliminate the risk of leaks (very important, many people mess this up!). Everything has been tightly secured with SSPI-86 all-steel interlock structural blind rivets - 3000 of them! A 16” roof raise on a bus this size would cost upwards of $15,000 or more at a shop (most shops start at $10,000 for short school buses). In addition to the roof raise, the rear windows and emergency roof hatches have been removed and enclosed with the same 18 gauge sheet metal — water-tight! The metal floor has been covered in Chassis Saver which bonds to metal and is said to permanently stop rust. The driver’s window is a 30" X 20" ToughGrade Horizontal Sliding RV Window, and I’m including a Recaro air seat to replace the existing seat (although it’s not yet installed). I’ve also cut 6 sheets of 3/4" fir rated plywood into 2” wide pieces which is ideal for framing (or “strapping”) the walls and ceilings. Lastly, I’m including two resources that will be of huge help in completing the build and maintaining the bus on the road: (1) International DT-466 Diesel Engine Service Manual, and (2) GENESIS Bus Service Manual, which is a 6-inch-thick binder of useful information. This bus is a GREAT option for somebody that wants the creative freedom to design their rig without dealing with the upfront labor (demo, roof raise, hatch & window deletes, decommissioning heaters, removing rust, old insulation, glue, etc.). When buying a finished skoolie (often times built by inexperienced DIY builders) you simply just don’t know what you’re buying. You’ll likely spend thousands or more rebuilding it to your liking, upgrading the solar system, batteries, etc. — avoid the hassle and uncertainty! Now, more about the $14,000 worth of additional items that I’m selling at a 10% discount: All items listed in the last photo are brand new and never installed, and they account for the vast majority of materials needed to complete this build (or, at least, the most expensive). The first amount represents the amount that I paid including taxes & shipping, while the second amount represents a 10% discount on that number. The solar/batteries are capable of running 3,950 watts of solar which is more than enough to power your entire rig. Given the uncertainty of future tariffs, this is a great option! I’ll deliver the bus & items anywhere in the continental U.S. for $250 per 500 miles from Denver, CO. I’m open to negotiate on prices, and please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions, more pictures, a video walkthrough, etc!
