It works on a trunk of a sedan, but also on a hatchback or a SUV. I used it most of the time on a 4Runner, which has a nearly vertical rear door. Very stable when tightened down. I drove many miles with 3 bikes and no issues. The best part is it goes on and off fast, and when not in use it folds flat making it super easy to store. I have to carry 6 bikes now so I don't use it anymore. I wish my new rack was as easy to deal with, but it is not!
