Description

Located in on office in Encino (Ventura Blvd. & Haskell Ave.). Style and Origin • The table and chairs appear to be in the Chinese Ming-style or possibly Qing Dynasty-style revival furniture, which was commonly reproduced during the 20th century. This is evidenced by the clean lines, subtle curves, and intricate inlaid lacquer work. • The set features mother-of-pearl or shell inlay on a lacquered surface with traditional Chinese motifs, including longevity symbols (shou 寿), dragons, and floral or cloud patterns, all of which are commonly associated with prosperity, good fortune, and harmony in Chinese culture. Materials • The outer frame is likely made of solid hardwood, possibly huanghuali or rosewood, both prized in Chinese furniture for their durability and aesthetic appeal. • The central panels (on the tabletop and chair seat/back) seem to be lacquered wood with painted and inlaid decoration. These areas often required skilled artisans to create and were considered luxury features. Craftsmanship • The table has a glass top, probably a later addition to protect the inlaid and painted panel beneath. • The chair features a central splat (the vertical panel in the backrest) with similar decorative work, indicating it was made as part of a matched set. • The joinery appears traditional, which is a hallmark of higher-quality Chinese furniture — often made without nails or screws. Cultural and Decorative Significance • The round symbol on the chair seat and table is a stylized “shou” (寿), representing longevity. • The overall aesthetic fits what was common in Chinese scholar’s furniture, which balanced utility and artistic expression, making it suitable for both use and display. Value and Rarity • Many such sets were made during the mid to late 20th century for export or domestic use by wealthier families — still valuable, but less so than genuine antiques. Carved
