Description
Hand painted Shanxi Province 19th Century depicting a traditional Japanese Opera Symbolizing Hope for a prosperous & enduring marriage. The Chinese Opera chests of this time depicted traditional morality tales & history of the region often lost to time. Made of Paulownia Wood. Paulownia trees are often planted at the birth of a daughter & considered symbols of prosperity, fertility & marital bliss. Once the tree became mature it would be transformed into a furniture piece & given as a dowry upon the marriage of a daughter. THIS chest survived a lengthy journey home to USA post Korean War (1950’s) with a veteran who upon seeing it was smitten by its beauty. Unique - One of a kind
