This imposing pair of antique French brass candelabra were acquired in the early 1960’s at the Paris ‘Flea Market’. I would date them as mid 19th C due to their quality and weight. They are highly decorative without being too fussy and have been beautifully and intricately designed to create an eye pleasing balance, whilst taking up a minimum of space. Decoration between all the swirling lines include two female heads either side of the round center support (which may be mermaids) and small clusters of grapes and seashell cartouches on the base. The brass is pierced in the center ball and at the base which adds to the effect of ‘lightness’. They appear to be expertly hand cast – no seams or joins to be seen. There is wonderful patina to the old brass, which could be left to darken or be given further polishing to really bring out a rich gleam. For something of this weight and height, these candelabra sit squarely and securely and are well balanced on six supporting ‘feet’ at their bases. They look stunning in any style of interior - on a long oak kitchen table or a mahogany table and as they are fairly slender in design, they also perfectly suit a dresser or sideboard against a wall. When lit, they actually cast quite a lot of light and their inbuilt ‘bobaches’ catch the majority of drips. Condition is excellent for pieces of their age – nothing is bent or looks ‘off kilter’. Approx. measurements are 16.5” full height, 11” high at top of the four arms, 8” across in width of the arms, 6.5” wide at the base and 3 3/4 “deep, so they fit easily on a narrow side table. Each of these weighs about 5 ¾ pounds.
