Tom Clark, former Davidson professor and renowned gnome sculptor, graduated from Davidson in 1949 and joined the religion department in 1958, teaching for 26 years. Clark’s gnomes—inspired by real people —were sold around the world and in more than 5,000 U.S.-based stores. The business grew quite a bit from the early days of digging clay from the creek in the middle of Patterson Court.
