The battery compartment is located underneath the fabric. So you have to unzip the fleece cover in order to check or change the batteries. There are 2 buttons on the battery cover that operate the vibration and heartbeat sound. You can increase the vibration and the heartbeat by tapping on the buttons until you get to a setting that you like. In order to turn the cushion off, you do the same.
