Manufactured by GE, this is a compressor kit for a refrigerator. The compressor's job is to pressurize the system and warm the refrigerant while propelling it through the rest of the cooling system. The compressor is controlled by a thermostat inside the refrigerator. When the thermostat detects a high temperature, the compressor engages, helping to cool the refrigerator and preserve food. Compressors are the core of the refrigeration system. There are also subject to a great deal of wear and tear through normal cycling on and off. In addition, compressors can be damaged if they run out of oil, if contaminants enter the system, and through exposure to prolonged operation due to a faulty thermostat or low refrigerant levels.
