2 1940s-50s Asian Mini Bonsai Preserved Landscapes Chinese Art Form Penjing

These renditions of natural Asian landscapes are very cool and very unusual. Penjing is the Ancient Chinese art of depicting artistically formed trees and landscapes into miniatures. These belonged to my Aunt who purchased them in the 1940’s and early 1950’s. They are small-scaled Chinese landscapes featuring preserved bonsai trees with dried branches and trunks. Both containers have a foundation that appears to be stones and dyed concrete. The “trees” are the compositions’ dominant elements and are carefully shaped to capture the dramatic forms trees can take in the wild. The piece with the green tree measures approximately 9” tall x 6 1/2” wide. Its orange, red, white bowl appears to be metal. A maker’s mark and China are stamped in red ink on the underside. Includes a ceramic figure of an Ancient Scholar measuring approximately 1 1/2” tall. The piece with the “yellowish” tree measures approximately 7” tall x 6” wide. It’s ceramic container is unmarked. These are nice examples of an art form from the past which capture the spirit of nature. They were designed to convey landscapes experienced from various viewpoints. All sides are relevant and significant. They are not plastic as is commonly available nowadays. Due to their age, they are dusty and fragile. Vintage condition.
