Description
Attractive vintage compound monocular brass bar limb microscope in the Society of Arts style, 19thcentury. It is signed ”Knott & Co. 22 E. Elliott St. Liverpool”. Knott was most likely a retailer. There is another identical microscope signed by E.G. Wood, who was a maker as well as a retailer, so it could have been made by Wood. Based upon design elements it is possible that the instrument could also have been made by Charles Baker, or Swift and Son, left unsigned to be signed by the retailer if so desired. -Japanned Crouch style iron base. -Rack and pinion coarse focus, thumbwheel fine focus. -Square stage with movable slide holder. -Single-sided concave mirror, attached to a gimbal, affixes to a collar on the lower limb. Accessories - Single objective. Can is marked “Dolland London 2 in.” - One eyepiece. - Live box with slots for 20slides. - Dovetailed mahogany case with lock and key and brass carry handle. Condition - Coarse focus and fine focus operate smoothly. - Polished mahogany case is very good. The lock is functional but a bit tricky. - Mirror retain its silvering. - Optically sound. - Original finish has some scuffs and tarnish commensurate with use and age. Tube is very good with its original lacquer.
