Antique Chinese Kang table With Glass Top

Kang tables were traditionally used in Northern China as a low platform for sleeping, eating, or relaxing. Over time, they were repurposed as low tables. The intricate carvings often depict scenes from folklore, mythology, or historical events. These tables were typically made from hardwoods like rosewood or elm. During the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic period (late 19th to early 20th century), there was a surge in the production of ornate Kang tables for both domestic use and export. The level of detail in the carving reflected the owner's status and wealth. The scenes often served as auspicious symbols, bringing good fortune and prosperity. The table in the image appears to be a well-preserved example of this type of furniture.
