This exceptional piece is an authentic double-sided, multi-faced okimono celebrating traditional Japanese theater. It cleverly depicts two back-to-back expressive characters (representing a theatrical duo or transformation theme) sharing a single draped robe. On one side is a wide, joyful laughing face, while the reverse side reveals a starkly contrasted, intense grimacing character. Adding to the artistry, a small rectangular inset on the side reveals a third hidden miniature stage mask carved into the garment folds. This hidden complexity makes it much more desirable to collectors who love trick carvings (mitate-bori). This fine piece features an authentic, incised oval signature cartouche (kakuhan) located on the lower left side of the performer's robe. While the specific master carver's name hasn't been definitively translated, the presence of a formal signature seal indicates a piece of superior workshop craftsmanship rather than a generic export souvenir.
