Description
This striking han'nya (jealous hag) mask is hand-carved from Yakusugi — the sacred Japanese cedar native to Yakushima Island, prized for its tight grain, resin-rich durability, and fragrant aroma. Sculpted in the 1950s, the mask embodies a powerful expression of jealousy and sorrow, traditionally used in Noh theater to portray the transformation of a woman consumed by rage into a demon. The surface retains the rhythmic tool marks of the artisan’s chisel, echoing the traditional kurikata carving style. The sharp fangs, flared nostrils, and protruding horns are masterfully rendered to evoke both terror and pathos. Inside the mask is the carved signature 芳之刀 (Hō no Tō) — likely the gō or art name of the carver, roughly translating to “Blade of Hō” or “Virtuous Sword,” a poetic moniker reflecting pride in craftsmanship. A rare mid-century piece carved from precious Yakusugi, this mask is as much a sculptural work of art as it is a cultural relic. Ideal for collectors of Japanese antiques, theater history, or exceptional woodwork. Condition: Excellent vintage condition with minor age wear; no cracks or repairs. Provenance: Japan, private collection
