Description

Primarily indoor plants but can be kept outdoors. Kalanchoe is a popular, low-maintenance succulent known for its vibrant, long-lasting flowers, making it a common houseplant. Native to Madagascar, it thrives in bright, indirect light and well-draining soil, requiring infrequent watering as it's drought-tolerant. Key care involves letting the soil dry between waterings, providing 14 hours of darkness to encourage reblooming, and keeping it in warm temperatures, while also noting it is toxic to pets. Common Names: Mother-in-law plant, devil's backbone, chandelier plant. Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal; a south or west-facing window is good indoors. Protect from intense, direct sun outdoors. Water: Water thoroughly but allow soil to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot. Soil: Use a well-draining mix, like a cactus/succulent mix or a blend of potting soil and perlite. Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures (65-80°F indoors) and cooler nights (45-65°F) to prolong blooms. Fertilizer: Feed monthly during the growing season (spring/summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Kalanchoe are "short-day" plants, needing about 14 hours of uninterrupted darkness for 6 weeks to set new buds. Place in a dark room or closet for this period, away from any light, to trigger flowering. Kalanchoe plants thrive both indoors and outdoors, making them highly versatile for, say, window sills or garden displays. As drought-tolerant succulents, they thrive in bright, indirect light and require well-draining soil. While popular as indoor potted plants, they can be grown outdoors in USDA Zones 10-12, or moved to a patio in summer. The most common scientific name for the popular florist kalanchoe is Kalanchoe blossfeldiana. It belongs to the family Crassulaceae, is a native of Madagascar, and is often called flaming Katy or Christmas kalanchoe
