Description
Chinese soapstone carving, likely depicting Shouxing, the God of longevity. Soapstone carvings have been found dating back over 3,000 years, with the oldest originating in China. The Ming Dynasty (1(contact info removed)) marked the peak of soapstone production in China. Soapstone was favored as jade became more expensive. The statue may be insured for $200-$300 if in perfect condition. Larger, intricately carved soapstone pieces can be quite valuable. Soapstone is composed of up to 80% talc.
