Kachina Sun Face
Description
Identification • Type: Sun Kachina (Tawa or Sun Face), an important Hopi figure symbolizing warmth, growth, and life. • Medium: Carved wood, hand-painted, adorned with feathers, fur, fabric, bells, and miniature accessories (cornflower, gourd rattle). • Base inscription: “Sun Kachina – by M.R.(likely the carver’s name/signature) • Condition: Appears excellent—no major visible damage, bright paint, intact feathers, well-dressed. See my other listings of Kachinas. Can sell as a collection. Open to offers ⸻ Value Considerations The value of a Kachina doll: 1. Artist – Most likely a Hopi carver. Signed by M.R. I do not know identity of carver. 2. Age – Appears to be more contemporary (likely late 20th–early 21st century). I bought in 1980s. 3. Detail & Quality – Intricate carving, fine painting, realistic proportions, and traditional dress add value. This Sun Kachina is colorful, detailed, and well-finished, which raises it above mass-market tourist pieces. 4. Size – Larger dolls (over 12–14”) usually command higher prices. This sun face kachina measures 20 inches tall x 12 inches wide. Please see my other listings for Kachinas.
