Description
Height: 14” Length: 9” Representation in leather and acrylic paint of the legend of Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. In Aztec mythology, Iztaccihuatl was a princess who fell in love with Popocatepetl, one of her father's warriors. The princess's father sent the warrior to a battle in Oaxaca, promising to deliver him to his daughter if he returned victorious and with the head of his enemy in the spear. Later the warrior returned with the head of his rival bleeding on his spear, so he received a feast for his victory. However, his love was finished because the princess had died. With a broken heart he took the body of his beloved to a mountain and the gods turned it into an inactive volcano. Then the warrior took a torch and promised that no hurricane, no matter how strong he would carry his waters, would quench the fire with which he watched the body of his beloved. Because of this, the gods gave him eternity, turning it into a volcano in exchange for guarding the princess Iztaccihuatl.
