Listed is an authentic 1896 Puerto Rico 5 Centavos silver coin, struck at the Madrid Mint during the final years of Spanish rule. Puerto Rico only issued coinage under Spain in 1895 and 1896, making these pieces historically significant and highly collectible. The coin features the inscription “ISLA DE PUERTO RICO” above the denomination and date on the obverse. The reverse displays the Spanish royal coat of arms with the “PLUS ULTRA” motto across the iconic Pillars of Hercules. Assayers’ initials P.G. (Práxedes González) and the Madrid “M” mintmark appear below the shield.
