Truly one of a kind. *heavily cross posted * This beautiful 100+ year old Mendelssohn piano was lovingly repurposed into a stunning new piece of furniture. The piano itself was crafted at the turn of last century out of tiger oak (quarter-sawn oak) and ash wood. It has now been carefully painted with black satin latex furniture enamel. The paint’s consistency allows for the wood grain to come through and be seen clearly and richly. This piano has a gorgeous texture. The new surface is a 5/4"-thick slab of knotty pine, topped with a hard resin layer, and sealed with urethane. The new desktop has been made so that it will easily hinge open for inconspicuous storage in the key bed. The resulting hidden space is deep enough to hold a laptop comfortably, with room to spare. The piano measures 62” long, 29” deep, and 56.5” tall. The surface height is 32” and the surface is 53.5” wide and 18" deep. The inner workings are now clearly on display — showcasing both the amazing creation that is a piano, as well as the beauty of that furniture-making era. The serial number is inset in gold with a filigree below. The Mendelssohn name is raised and embossed. The floorboard behind the foot pedals is a rich wine tone, that plays enchantingly off of the warm tones of the orange-hued sounding board, and the red stringing braid. The craftsmanship is an absolute delight. The piano harp frame is made of cast iron. An advertisement from the time boasts “The sounding boards are made from the most carefully selected and thoroughly seasoned spruce boards, giving the greatest resonance possible to obtain.” The over strung scale features the original copper-coated bass strings; darkened by age, they are accessible for an intimate experience of the instrument. When you add in the glossy, rich browns of the new desktop, the overall effect is warm and bold and alluring.
