Description

The script is in a 19th-century French cursive style, very typical of regimental or soldier personalization. I can make out "1877" quite clearly, which lines up with the Model 1855/1872 cuirassier backplates still in issue under the Third Republic. That date would also explain the "golden" brass-faced finish. No. 6778” (or “Nº 6778”), which is consistent with issue numbering. The inscription begins with what looks like a name in cursive — possibly “Caporal …” or a surname starting with L (the looped capital resembles an “L” or “J”). The following characters are too faint for full confidence, but it looks like a typical ownership engraving rather than a factory mark. 100% authentic.
