The coloration in mahoganyobsidian is thought to come from hematite included in the glass as it coolsfrom volcanoes. Also said that iron impurities cause the reddish / brown color.This leads to the large, rust-colored bands and spots in the stone. You’llsometimes hear this variety referred to as red obsidian. Volcanic glass - a rock rather than a mineral, it is a mixture ofcryptocrystalline grains of silica minerals in a glass-like suspension, asuper-cooled liquid.
