Description
Weight: 13 Grams / 0.46 Ounce Size Approx: 2.25 inch x 1.50 inch 0.25 inch Luster: Glassy Hardness: 5 - 6 Specific Gravity: 2.35 - 2.60 Some light passes through material, could be used for window catcher art work. The coloration in mahoganyobsidian is thought to come from hematite included in the glass as it coolsfrom volcanoes. Also said that iron impurities cause the reddish / brown color. This leads to the large, rust-colored bands and spots in the stone. You’llsometimes hear this variety referred to as red obsidian. Volcanic glass - a rock rather than a mineral, it is a mixture ofcryptocrystalline grains of silica minerals in a glass-like suspension, asuper-cooled liquid. Obsidian is formed in the latest stage of volcaniceruptions, the silica left over after most of the other elements and water havebeen used up are ejected or flow out and rapidly chilled at surfacetemperatures. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ The stone is wet in these photos. This is what the stone will look like after its been tumbled and polished. Showing the stone in this state shows its true potential.
