Description
This is a Rare, Antique Electric Hat Stretcher from the Garve Company of New York, dated circa 1926. It is an authentic piece of early American Haberdashery and Millinery equipment; this relates to the mercantile trade, which is commerce and business, mainly referring to shops that sold men's clothing and accessories like hats, shirts, and ties. This industrial-quality tool was used by professional hatters and is a perfect find for collectors of vintage Americana, Fashion history, Art Deco or Industrial decor. This unique hat stretcher tells a story of a time when hats were a major part of fashion and these tools were essential for the trade. _________________ The two expandable, head-shaped molds are cast aluminum and heat up quickly for the hat stretching process. The manual cast metal hand cranker turns and adjusts the molds to different sizes as desired. The stand underneath the aluminum molds is cast metal, and the wooden base has an attached metal sizing plate that says: GARVE ELECTRIC Patented April 20th 1926 Other patents pending Manufactured and sold by The Garve Co., Inc. 33 w 60th st. New York Serial No. E11852 115 Volts - 300 Watts _________________ CONDITION: The Hat Stretcher is in working condition and heats up when plugged in*. (It has not been tested with a hat for the actual stretching). This antique item shows authentic signs of its age, including surface rust, scuffs, and a rich patina on the metal, which can be expected on a device from the 1920's. Two of the tiny screws holding the bottom end of the metal sizing chart down are gone, but easily replaceable. The original detachable power cord is also included. (Often the cords are missing on these old models). Approximate dimensions and weight: Height: 12 inches Length: 12.5 inches Width: 6.75 inches Weight: 10-15 lbs _____________________ *This electric hat stretcher has been tested and confirmed to heat up. Due to its age, it should be plugged into a GFCI outlet as a safety precaution, since electrical standards have changed since the 1920s. It's recommended to have an electrician or qualified professional inspect this device if it's going to be fully operated. But of course this historical treasure can also be kept on display to enjoy--and also would make a great conversational piece! : )
