X2 1890 Treasury Department Letters From George Coffin Centered US Naval Academy in 1860 graduated and assigned to steam sloop Ticonderago. Wounded in land assault on Fort Fischer. 1884 he answered the Navys request for relief expedition to the Artic in search for Lt Adolphus Greely and his party. Suffered frost bite. 1886 became chief of the Lighthouse Division as a Navy Commander and then Captain in 1(contact info removed) he applied against advice due to his health, for active duty in the Spanish American war. Died in 1899 in Japan. Ashes were placed next to his wife in Oak Hill Cemetery in Georgetown instead of Arlington National Cemetery. Pick up in James Island near folly beach.
