Description

For sale is a beautiful piece of vintage mid-century coastal folk art with a fascinating personal history. This framed seashell floral arrangement features an array of natural sea shells meticulously arranged into a striking bouquet against a crisp black backing. The frame and backing are crafted from genuine Philippine Mahogany (Tanguile wood), a native timber widely utilized by Filipino artisans during this era for its straight grain and warm, natural tone. The Story & Provenance: This piece carries an incredible, authentic backstory. It was originally crafted from shells harvested directly along the famous Cebu shoreline. In 1975, following the end of the Vietnam War, a young Filipina woman married an American GI stationed in the region. When they relocated back to the United States to start their new life together, she brought this cherished piece of her homeland with her. The original "Handcrafted in Philippines" stock label remains intact on the back. Artistry & Regional Significance: Cebu and its surrounding islands are world-renowned for their marine biodiversity and a rich tradition of coastal shell artistry. This piece beautifully displays that regional craft, utilizing delicate cup-shaped Tellin Shells to form flower petals, smaller snail shells for the stems, and a prominent, pristine murex shell anchoring the top of the design. Dimensions: • Height: 12.25" • Width: 8.25" • Total Depth: 1.25" (measured from the backboard to the peak of the largest central murex shell) Condition: Excellent vintage condition. The Philippine Mahogany frame is solid, and the black fabric backing is clean and free of major fading. All delicate shell elements are intact and securely attached. A wonderful, narrative-rich display piece perfect for coastal decor, mid-century folk art collectors, or anyone who appreciates unique historical keepsakes. * Cash Payment Only...
