Description
Bottles are from the Emerson Drug Company in Baltimore, Maryland. Bromo-Seltzer was a popular effervescent antacid and pain reliever, originally marketed for headaches, upset stomach, and other ailments. The original formula contained sodium bromide and acetanilide. Bromides are a class of tranquilizers that were withdrawn from the U.S. market in 1975 due to their toxicity and labeled POISONS. Their sedative effect probably accounted for Bromo-Seltzer's popularity as a hangover remedy. These bottles are now considered artifacts, providing insight into late Victorian-era medicine and consumer products. The Bromo-Seltzer Tower in Baltimore, a landmark inspired by the product, also attests to its cultural impact. These bottles are about 2 3/4 inches tall and all writing is embossed on them. One has a chip and crack at the top (see picture).
