In general Smoothing Planes are used for the final finish, creating a wood surface as smooth or smoother than sandpaper can. At 9 1/2 inches long and 4 1/2 lbs, the No. 4 Bronze is near the top of its category in size, making it a great all-around smoothing plane. You will find it able to cut though even the hardest woods with no chatter and with zero tearout, leaving a smooth final surface. These planes cut beautifully where others fail: reversed grain, quilted or fiddleback timbers, even knots and end grain can be shaved cleanly, with no loss of control. I’m selling these and all the other tools for a friend that can no longer use them due to illness. They are all from a home workshop and are all very well cared for.
