Description

Norman Rockwell (1(contact info removed)) “Our Heritage” (1950 Boy Scouts of America Calendar Illustration for Brown & Bigelow) signed Limited Edition Artist Proof (1976). Framed size is 33” x 40”. A nine-color collotype, Our Heritage was printed by Triton Press at Atelier Ettinger in June of 1976 . The limited edition, measuring 25 by 33.75 inches, consists of 295 impressions on Rivers BFK paper. 200 were numbered and 60 artist proofs were signed in pencil by Norman Rockwell. An additional 35 prints pencil signed and designated in roman numerals were reserved by the artist. Each limited print carries the embossed copyright seal of Eleanor Ettinger Inc. In addition to the limited edition described, an unsigned, unlimited edition has been printed on regular poster stock. The unlimited edition is also distinguishable from the signed limited edition artist proof for sale here by the existence of a copyright notice and other printing in the bottom margin. Our Heritage was originally commissioned as the 1950 Boy Scouts of America calendar illustration. During World War I, Norman Rockwell produced a poster illustration for the American Red Cross which depicted a Boy Scout bandaging an injured puppy's paw. The Brown and Bigelow Company reused that image for their 1925 calendar, marking the start of a new annual tradition. In 1926, the Boy Scouts and Rockwell worked together with Brown and Bigelow on the production of the first of fifty-one yearly calendar images. The Boy Scout calendars were one of Rockwell's highest paying commissions. By depicting George Washington praying and two Boy Scouts holding an open book, the painting reminds young citizens of their heritage. When striving to be the best they can be, the Boy Scouts should remember the ideas and sacrifices that paved the way for them. Washington's religious faith and his dedication to winning the war should inspire the boys to strive for a similar level of honor, dedication, and duty. Included with the print are the following 5 items: 1. Description of the piece dated February 16, 1981 from the gallery of original purchase: Merrill Chase Galleries. 2.
