Description
Displays beautifully and rare in this condition with no rust!! Vintage Roebling Alligator Wrench No. 3 manufactured by Roebling in Trenton, New Jersey... the same company which built the Brooklyn Bridge in NYC and Riegelsville Bridge in Pennsylvania. Alligator wrenches (so-called because opening is shaped like an alligator's mouth, and also known as Bulldog Wrench or Gator Wrench) were used primarily with square nuts, and to turn iron and steel pipes which could not be turned with a regular wrench. Pipe fitters often used this tool in fitting or removing air and water piping from railroad locomotives. Very good condition with some signs of age and use as shown in the pics. No Rust!!Wrench is solid throughout, and jaw teeth are fine. Has the Roebling “R” stamped on one side of the jaw, along with No. 3. Patent date Feb. 8, 1898 stamped on one side of the arm, and wrench name and Roebling company info stamped on the other. Misprint on wrench name spelling with letter “A” missing from word “ALLIGATOR” as shown. Measures about 15.5” long and jaw opening about 1 5/8”. See pics for more details.
