Description

The Indian Head cent, designed by James B. Longacre, was minted from 1859 to 1909. It replaced the Flying Eagle cent and was, in turn, replaced by the Lincoln cent. The coin features a depiction of Liberty wearing a Native American headdress on the obverse, and a laurel wreath on the reverse (changed to an oak wreath with a shield in 1860). While not made of silver or gold, these coins were made of bronze (88% copper, 12% nickel). The 1903 Indian Head cent is not particularly rare, but its value depends on its condition, with higher grades fetching higher prices. Coins in uncirculated condition with original mint luster are more valuable to collectors.
