Description
Traveling Man Treasures is selling this West African Kora; a tribal guitar/lute made of a gourd lined with calfskin body and decorated with cowrie shells. This Kora was made c. 1960s and is in good overall condition as shown. The Kora is a West African (Mali) musical instrument consisting of a gourd resonator covered with calfskin and a thin, round leather-wrapped wooden neck. The strings (traditionally 4, but this Kora has 10) are held in place by leather rings, parallel to the instrument's neck. The body and neck are decorated with cowrie shells. The exquisite craftsmanship of the piece is evident. Although it appears this Kora could be played with a few adjustments, I would consider it a decorative/display instrument.
