Excellent vintage condition — minor surface marks consistent with hand-carved wood. Beautiful smooth patina and strong symmetry typical of mid-century Ashanti carving. Fascinating Fun Facts: • Akwaba (or Akuaba) dolls are traditional fertility figures from the Ashanti culture of Ghana. • Their large round heads represent beauty and the ideal form of a child. • Originally carried by women to encourage conception and healthy births. • Historically, women would carry the Akua'ba doll against their backs, wrapped in their skirt, in the same way they would carry an infant. • Once a mother had fulfilled the idol's purpose, she would either place it on her altar or pass it down to her own daughter. • Legend: The origin of the Akua'ba is often traced to a story of a woman named Akua who was unable to conceive. On the advice of a priest, she commissioned a carver to make a wooden doll, and after caring for it as if it were her own child, she eventually gave birth.
