Description

Antique John Linwood clock works Bottle-jack or meat-jack (also called roasting jack or spit jack). Made from brass and used for rotating meat on a spit. The case is shaped like a bottle with clockwork motor in a cylinder on an octagonal base with hanging loop at top. Keyhole and cover along side of cylinder. John Linwood of Birmingham, England. He is believed to have started making roasting jacks around 1800 and registered his oak tree mark at the Birmingham assay office in 1807. He was succeeded by E.B. Bennett & Co.
