Description
Artist: Katō Usuke (加藤宇助, 1915–1981) was a Japanese potter of the Seto and Akazu traditions, active in the mid-20th century. He is known for reviving classical styles such as Shino, Oribe, and Setoguro, blending historical techniques with a modern studio sensibility. His works are often signed “う” (U) (see photo 5). Nonagonal (9-sided), hand-thrown vase with a tapering form and restrained shoulder. Finished in a deep iron glaze with subtle blue-green pooling and a quiet iridescent surface that shifts in light. Applied nodules near the shoulder serve as Usuke's characteristic signature detail of the studio and kiln. Produced in the 1950s. Dimensions: approx. 17.5" H × 6.5–7" W Condition: very good; minor surface variation consistent with firing and age. Please also see Usuke's other smaller works complete with original signed box and inserts in our booth.
