Description
Vintage Postcard Penobscot Marine Museum The image depicts "The Northern Whale Fishery," a famous painting by William John Huggins, engraved by Edward Duncan in 1829. The scene illustrates the perils and rewards of whaling in the icy waters of the Davis Strait, located between Baffin Bay, Canada, and Greenland. The painting prominently features the ship Harmony of Hull, alongside other whaling vessels, engaged in hunting seals, narwhals, and whales. The Harmony is shown with its May Day garland, a celebratory decoration hoisted during whaling expeditions, halfway up its main-topgallant stay. The artwork also depicts various aspects of whaling, including the chase, capture, and processing of the catch, such as "trying out" or boiling down the blubber on the Harmony's bow.
