I’ve always been fascinated with the fossils that come from it. Exact Size: 5.36” (136.2mm) High × 1.14” (28.9mm) Long × 1.06” (26.9mm) wide ☆Please note that since it is tapered and gets narrower towards the top, these measurements are at the widest part near the bottom. Exact Weight: 6.88 Ounces (195 Grams) It's a 4-sided Tapered Obelisk Aka: Tower or Standing Point, cut flat on the bottom, so it will display upright on any flat surface. It is professionally hand-cut and polished, carefully bringing out the amazing patterns, detail, & outline of as many of the Turritella fossil remains as possible. Also, there are a few areas hard to tell from the photos, but where there are small crystal caves exposed & where some of the fossil shells had hollow areas, like shells do, & this can be seen or felt better in person. This is not damage or flaws & it is left like that on purpose, to add to the intrigue. The buyer will receive the same piece shown in the pictures of this listing. If you want to know more about Turritella Agate & The Green River, then read on! *What is Turritella Agate? Turritella Agate is the popular trade name used to describe a variety of Chalcedony, a mineral of the Quartz family. It’s a type of fossiliferous agate found in the Green River Formation of Wyoming. It is a rich, earthy brown or black, and sometimes has other colors in it as well. It is easily recognized by its unique sea creature-type patterns because it contains fossil snails that stand out in a white-to-tan color that contrasts with the brownish Agate. **How Did Turritella Agate Form? About 50 million years ago, during the Eocene epoch, the young Rocky Mountains were almost finished growing, and the landscape of what is now parts of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming consisted of rugged mountains separated by broad intermountain basins. Rains falling on the slopes of these mountains ran off the land and collected into streams that carried sand, silt, mud, and dissolved materials down into the lakes that occupied the intermountain basins. Over time, these sediments began filling the lakes, and many types of fossils were preserved within them. Abundant plants and algae grew on the margins of these lakes, providing a perfect habitat and food source for Turritella, also known as the freshwater snail. When the snails died, their shells sank to the bottom of the lake. They were so prolific that entire bodies of sediment were composed almost entirely of their shells. After these layers were buried, groundwater moved through the sediments. Small amounts of dissolved microcrystalline silica in the groundwater began to form within the cavities of the snail shells and the empty spaces between them. Over time, the entire mass of fossils was silicified, forming the brown fossiliferous Agate (also known as Chalcedony) that we know today as Turritella Agate. ***Where is the Green River? Coursing from its headwaters in Wyoming’s Wind River Range, the mighty Green River descends into Utah, flows east to Colorado, and then returns through Utah as it carves a path through a dramatic and varied landscape of mountains, canyons and desert for 730 miles. ****What is the Green River? The Green River Formation is one of the best-known rock units in the world for its fossils. Spectacular fish, plant, insect, and animal fossils have been found in the Green River Formation. Some natives call it the “Dead River”, due to the many fish fossils & other sea animal remains (fossils) preserved within the riverbeds.
