ZIPPO LIGHTER Original 1932 Replica ('89)

Highly collectible original 1932 Replica Zippo Lighter produced by hand in 1989. It is a first edition, second and improved, year 1989, production model. Near-perfect copy of the first ever Zippo created in 1932. The production of the ""ORIGINAL 1932 REPLICA"" started in early 1988 & ended in mid 1992. These lighters were produced by hand because the case was taller & the corners were square, thus they did not fit the equipment for the current Zippo lighters. The case is made of solid brass as the original one. George Blaisdell founded the Zippo Manufacturing Company in 1932, and designed and patented the original Zippo in 1932, but the production & sale started one year later in 1933. As the 1932 Replicas were produced by hand, some finish & detail differences can be noticed, comparing the first year's production run from 1988 to the ones from 1989 through 1992. The very first 1932 Replicas produced in 1988 have a highly polished lid top and bottom and also highly polished sides. This was contrary to the original 1932 lighter specifications. The item for sale is not polished, as per the correct specs of the original lighter. The bottom stamp did not change during the production, but by being hand polished, the 1932 Replicas made in 1988 have slightly rounded corners, again contrary to the specifications of the original 1932 lighter. The item for sale has all its corners completely square. When the five-barrel hinges were absolutely straight in 1988, their look was changed in 1989 to being pitched on the outer ends. As a matter of fact, hand polishing all the sides of the 1988 models, resulted in the corners being rounder & thinner too by losing some material. All original 1932 Replicas (1988 through 1992) contain a small plastic spacer that prevents the insert from slipping too deep inside the case. The later produced original 1932 second release (1997) & the 1933 first release (1998 through 2001) have a modified bottom part to make the insert fit perfectly contrary to the specifications of the original 1932 Zippo lighter.
