Description
This blade was purchased from the workshop of Walkie Kolia and Taumaoe Aviata in Patamea village on the island of Savai’i. Patamea is known for wood handicrafts due to its location in the mountainous tropical cloud forests of central Savai’i on the upper reaches of the Mali’oli’o River. The handle is made of the maota mea wood native to the upper montane forests of Sāmoa. The handle has a coconut fiber cord for easy wall display. These axes are based on the kind used by warriors from different villages that were common in pitched battles and also served a ceremonial purpose.
